Before Choosing Typeface

Typeface is not just a technical side of an article. Its form might attract reader’s attention and its size might define the length of an article. Thus, think twice before selecting typeface randomly.

While choosing a typeface there are several factors newspaper designer should take into consideration. First of all, it’s the price of the typeface. For example, if you would like to have Big Caslon family typeface on about 26-50 computers, you should pay approximately 850$ for license. The more variations of typefaces and the more computers you want to have these typefaces, the more you have to pay.

Another factor is the size of typeface you plan to use. As each inch of the paper is very important and meaningful, you should pay attention to how many typefaces could be placed on a line. It will let you publish longer articles and you won’t have to shorten your story for lack of space.

The last important point to keep in mind is the quality of the paper you plan to print the article. As newspaper paper quality is not that high, you should remember that typefaces might not look as fancy and nice on paper as they are on screen.
