The Observer-Dispatch
The Observer-Dispatch is a newspaper in Utica, New York, and serves basically central part of the NY state. The publication is owned by GateHouse Media.
I got interested in this newspaper when I found out that Observer-Dispatch was redesigned very recently, several weeks ago. First edition with new design was published on 1 July, 2011.
First change that catches the eye is that the space of a page is reduced. Apart from this, another easy-to-notice fact is the usage of colors on nameplate. New media gave opportunity to editors to use colors not only on front pages but also for the rest of the stories.
In addition to the colors, innovation on sports pages is that the left rail is gone, allowing for much larger centerpiece images and design detail. More space is given to content promotions at the top of the page.
The newspaper consisted of three sections. After redesign the number increased with one and now Observer-Dispatch has additional part called Living.
In this section they cover stories about school zone, also stories provided by local volunteers, profiles of a standout local senior, a look at places, businesses or people that make the region unique as well as stories about local athletes both young and old.
The new Observer-Dispatch uses typeface family of MINION for headlines and FRUTIGER fonts for leads while the typeface of the body texts remained unchanged. They are written with Corona fonts again.
