The World's Best-Designed Newspaper 2010

The World's Best-Designed Newspaper of 2010 is Portuguese newspaper i.

The paper was launched one year earlier, in 2009. Although Portugal is not the best place to start a new paper, i managed to attract attantion of local and international society very soon because of its very efficient and easy-to-understand design. They tell stories with graphic, mix different visual languages as well as present photo-essays. Reader can find interesting usage of black and white pictures. Apart from photos, they apply different kind of illustrations as they give space and freedom to illurstrators.

The Society for News Design (www.snd.org) awards news organizations in various nominations annually. One of the nominations is The World's Best-Designed Newspaper. Each year this nomination has different amount of winners. For example, last year only i was a winner while in 2009 three newspapers got the prize (Der Freitag, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagzeitung and New York Times).

The judge consisting of five people met on 12-14 February, 2011 and started to discuss the nominated candidates. The judges were Haika Hinze, the art director of German paper Die Zeit which won the same prize 5 times; Heidi de Laubenfels who is the deputy managing editor of The Seattle Times, an American newspaper which was named as one of the best-designed papers in 1996; Svetlana Maximchenko, editor-in-chief of Russian newspaper Akzia, winner of 2007 and 2008 awards; and Sara Quinn, visual journalism faculty of Poynter Institute.

The award ceremony was held in Orlando, USA, on 22 February, 2011.
